Library Book Club to discuss Peyton Place

The Library Book Club will discuss Peyton Place by Grace Metalious. The discussion will be held on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 1 pm and is open to the public.

Published in 1956, Metalious’s Peyton Place launched the unknown author into the public eye and transformed the publishing industry becoming America’s first “blockbuster” selling more than 12 million copies in paperback. The novel set on the New York Times bestseller list for 59 weeks and surpassed Gone With the Wind to become the top-selling novel of all time, a position that it held for 20 years. The Dell paperback edition sold for 50 cents and featured the quote “The explosive best seller that lifts the lid off a respectable New England town.” The novel that shocked a nation was discussed, criticized, and banned in libraries and communities across America but remains in print after more than 60 years.

The edition that is being discussed includes an introduction by Ardis Cameron which analyses the novel from a current day perspective and explores the novels influential role in American literary and cultural history. Cameron is the author of Unbuttoning America: A Biography of Peyton Place.

“There can be neither beauty, nor trust, nor security between a man and a woman if there is not truth.”
― Grace Metalious, Peyton Place
